Getting ready for Hogwarts
Jun. 26th, 2006 07:38 pmI'm planning my lessons for teaching History of Magic, and I've decided my angle is going to be recognizing diversity and fostering acceptance through creative writing. So, if all you guys in HP fandom and all you guys in education would share your links on diversity and tolerance in the HP universe and teaching creative writing to kids K-8, especially interactive or group games/projects, I would be greatly appreciative.

Date: 2006-06-27 04:56 pm (UTC)As an activity, maybe you could have the kids create their own character to insert into the universe. I've done this with drama students: come up with all kinds of questions for them to answer, have them create a name for the character, the character's strengths and weaknesses, favorite things (subject in school, color), etc. In this exercise, you could have them assign their character to a House and explain why they would be in there (Gryffindor-bravery, Ravenclaw--cleverness, etc). Then, if you want to extend the assignment further, have them write a short story in which their character interacts with some of JK's characters, or, for something a bit different, have them step into the character in a skit sort of environment, introduce themselves to everyone else, and see how they interact.
Have fun! It sounds like a great time!

Date: 2006-06-28 03:37 pm (UTC)Of course I'm going to make the OWL 2s and the NEWTS write fanfic, LOL. They have to keep a journal as if they were a real hogwarts and student, and I'm going to break them up into teams of three to write a "how will it end" story.
