Happy New Year

goodnightmoonI'm starting the new year off with a house full of children. Cassie had three friends spend the night, plus their younger brother, bringing the count to seven. We had eight but one didn't sleep over. I have a couple of friends over (the parents of child #8) and we had a couple of drinks and helped the kids to sparklers, then watched the ball drop and put all the kids to bed. They ate too much sugar and had a perfectly wonderful time. Most of them are still asleep now, at nearly noon.
My new year's resolutions are modest. Mostly, I hope to be more grateful this year. I currently have one friend whose child is on her third week in the ICU with encephalitis, and a friend undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and another who has had a flare of guillian-barre syndrome that has left her with little control of her body. I complain a lot and feel unduly put-upon at times, but I have a lot to be thankful for and I need to keep that in mind. Even the tiny joys, the little moments of the sacred, need to be noted, and acknowledged as a blessing, not as an entitlement.
