winter walk day two
Jan. 16th, 2008 01:01 amSo technically I missed Monday, but it's still Monday on the coast, right? So that counts.
I am still grateful for my hat. So grateful that I slept with it last night and am wearing it right now. Which leads me to another thing I'm grateful for, which is Hogwarts camp. It might not sound like there's a connection, but there is. The same dear lady who knitted my hat also made my costumes for Hogwarts, hence the association.
I have served on numerous committees over the years, but never felt comfortable with leadership positions. So when I signed up to volunteer for camp, I told Zebrine, "Look, I'm a follower, not a leader. Point and tell me what to do and I'll do it, but don't ask me to be in charge of anything." So what did I end up doing? Being head of house and in charge of twenty kids, as well as teaching history of magic and in charge of developing a curriculum.
I was scared witless. But over a period of months I watched and participated and saw how a dozen people with many divergent ideas and personalities could pull together a million ideas and come up with a cohesive whole. I learned a lot about how to accomodate other people's way of doing things. I'm the type of person who wants to make a decision, formulate a plan, and go to it. Our fearless leader likes to dream big, change plans midstream, and worry a lot about the smallest details. This made me nuts sometimes, but I realized that whether we did things my way or her way, things still got done, and were magical and amazing for all the kids involved, which is what really mattered. Having finished our third year of Hogwarts, I found leadership skills I had no idea I was capable of, and learned a lot about working wit a team, instead of hanging back and letting the team decide then just following along. so I am deeply, deeply grateful for Hogwarts of Baton Rouge. I'm confident I've gotten even more out of it than the children have.
